LOOKING FOR SWEEPING COMPOUND?
What is sweeping compound?
It is one of the oldest maintenance products in use today for cleaning dirt and dust from warehouse and utility floors. It’s not a chemical; it is a compound that creates an “attractor” for dust and dirt. When sprinkled on the floor and swept along with a broom, sweeping compound gathers dust and dirt. It suppresses airborne dust during sweeping, thereby contributing to cleaner air in and around the job site.
Where are sweeping compounds used?
Conditions and operations that deposit dust and dirt on floors: such as construction sites, warehouse floors, mining operations, manufacturing facilities and utility buildings, are prime for sweeping compound use.
Three types of sweeping compound…what type is best?
With Cotto-Waxo sweeps, it’s all the “best”…what type of floor and dirt determines the type of sweeping compound needed.
SANDED OIL BASE “COTTO-WAXO” BRAND
This type of sweeping compound is recommended for unfinished wood and concrete floors [i.e. warehouses and factory floors]. It is formulated to hug and scour the floor; this compound is effective for removing “clay-type” dirt and dust from floor surfaces.

GRITLESS (NO-SAND/NO-GRIT) OIL BASE “VELVET” BRAND
This type of sweeping compound is recommended for painted surfaces, non-waxed floors and glass-like floors that are resistant to oil. It contains no grit or sand and will not scratch floor surface. This compound is very effective for entrapping siliceous (sand-like) dirt and dust.

Special note: Oil base sweeping compounds used on fine finished floors can act as a solvent and will soften and disintegrate floor surfaces. Use our wax based floor sweeping compounds, next type.
WAX BASE “WAX-O-LENE” BRAND
This type of sweeping compound is recommended for fine-finished floors, i.e. resilient, terrazzo, asphalt, rubber, cork marble and composition. It is safe to use on waxed floors. This compound does not contain oil or sand-grit so it will not scratch or disintegrate floor surface.

How to use sweeping compound Sweeping compound is not a self-acting product; it needs the pushing action of the broom to work. Place on the floor, four to eight cups of sweeping compound per foot of sweeping width. This amount should cover two or three feet in front of the broom’s sweeping path, but not more than the broom can effectively push. Use strong, quick strokes of the push-broom to tumble sweeping compound forward over the floor. As you push forward the compound, the dirt and dust are captured in the compound. The compound will darken as it captures more dirt and dust. Change as needed and dispose according to federal, state and local regulations. Use a push-broom that has medium bristle stiffness. Don’t use a flagged-end bristle broom, as the bristles will absorb the oil and waxes.
Are Sweeping Compounds All the Same? Generally, sweeping compounds are sold by weight, but used by volume. “Economically priced” sweeping compounds have short-comings. Many have higher sand content. Sand decreases the sweeping compound’s volume. Because of this, the sawdust content is less and so are the effective dust catching oils and waxes. Quality sanded oil base sweeping compounds contain 15 gallons of volume for 100 pounds of weight. Gritless oil based and wax based sweeping compounds contain 15 gallons of volume for 50 pounds of weight. Poor quality sweeping compounds have only water and surfactants as a substitute for the oils and waxes. This type compound feels like oil based products, but has a limited capacity holding dust and dirt. The life-span on the floor is short and compound “dry-out” occurs.
Care and Storage
Boxes and drums of sweeping compound should be stored in areas free from high temperature and open flames. After use and retrieval of sweeping compound from the container, reset the poly bag in a closed, twisted position to ensure moisture content remains.
